Do's & Don'ts Before & After BOTOX®

BOTOX® treatments are one of the most popular options for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, giving you a refreshed, youthful appearance. But to ensure the best results and a smooth experience, it’s important to follow certain pre- and post-treatment guidelines. Here’s a rundown of the key do’s and don’ts to help you maximize your treatment results with BOTOX®.

Before BOTOX® Treatment

Do:

  • Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications: If possible, avoid taking blood-thinning medications and supplements, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil, and other anti-inflammatory drugs, for about a week before your appointment. This can help minimize bruising and swelling.
  • Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration can help your skin’s recovery and reduce any potential swelling.
  • Communicate Your Medical History: Share your medical history and any medications or allergies with your provider. This helps your practitioner ensure that BOTOX® is safe and appropriate for you.

Don’t:

  • Consume Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your treatment, as it can increase your risk of bruising.
  • Use Topical Irritants: Refrain from using topical products with active ingredients like retinoids or glycolic acid a day or two before your appointment, as these can increase skin sensitivity.

After BOTOX® Treatment

Do:

  • Stay Upright: Remain upright for at least 4 hours post-treatment. This helps BOTOX® stay in the targeted muscles, preventing it from spreading to unintended areas.
  • Apply a Cold Compress if Needed: Minor swelling or bruising is common, and a cold compress can reduce these effects. However, avoid pressing hard on the area.
  • Be Patient for Results: Full results typically appear within 5–14 days, so allow your body some time to show the final outcome.

Don’t:

  • Touch or Massage Treated Areas: Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours, as this can move the BOTOX® to unintended areas, potentially affecting the results.
  • Exercise or Engage in Vigorous Activities: Strenuous activities and heavy exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours post-treatment to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising.
  • Expose Skin to Excessive Heat: Steer clear of saunas, hot tubs, or tanning beds for 24–48 hours, as extreme heat may increase blood flow and cause BOTOX® to spread beyond the intended areas.
